You can. It's totally configurable and variable per stage. Check out the Readme. Just adding the system allows you to mix and match as much as you want.

speaking of buttons, when posting mediafire, sendspace, 4shared (and maybe a few others) try and code your links. its also in posting options. this prevents adfly from being auto inserted.

Ooo maybe you could add the stage to give certain power ups or debuffs at random times

Hikyaku tosses items into the field, like in Samsho 1/2. It can throw food (replenish life), coins (adds to the score), or a bomb (that can explode or be a dud).

Stages themselves did not have any other interactions in Samsho, but it's a good idea for original stages.

Damn I can't wait to try this! I only have marvel and dc chars and it would be funny to see them mixed team on a boat

I use other company characters as thugs to make them fit in my universe lol so it won't be so out landish to see zangife or max fighting dare devil or bat man or spiderman

It is a pretty nice detail that part of the public is jumping or joining the fight in turns. With the correct sprites it can be adapted and brought to many scenarios.
