- The cinematic DC Universe won't just be one dominated by superheroes: in fact, its first phase will have a heaping helping of horror. Focusing on more obscure supernatural characters seems to be a big priority of James Gunn, and some of Hollywood's best talents are responding. This includes an acclaimed actor who's also known to be quite the comic book fan.
In a recent "Reddit AMA" session, Nicolas Cage stated that he'd like to play The Spectre in a DC Universe project. While this might seem like the mere pipe dreams of a fan, the obscure character actually fits in well with what Gunn is planning. Add in the star power of Cage, and the movie would actually be a great way to diversify the superhero film genre.
While hosting an AMA to promote the upcoming vampire movie Renfield, Nicolas Cage put forward his interest in portraying The Spectre in a movie. The Spectre in DC Comics is the spirit of God's wrath, being a violent and condemning force that usually enacts rather harsh forms of justice. Boasting immense power and being virtually unbeatable by mere mortals, The Spectre is one of the toughest forces within the DC Universe. Sadly, this power level hasn't seen gained him many adaptations outside the comics.
For the most part, his non-comic book appearances have merely been on television, and they haven't been substantial roles. A variant of the Jim Corrigan guise of The Spectre was briefly seen in The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths, though his borderline cameo didn't use the character to his full potential. Some of his best uses were in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode "Chill of the Night" and the animated DC Showcase: The Spectre feature. These rightfully portrayed him as a vengeful and vindictive force whose very presence was the stuff that nightmares are made of. Such a concept for a protagonist isn't exactly common in today's superhero movies, and using this format might circumvent one of Nicolas Cage's concerns.
In the case of the aforementioned animated adaptations, The Spectre was almost a secondary protagonist. This would put him in the spot of a boogeyman that eerily haunts the events of the movie, removing the usual constraints of superhero movies. Those require a foe of equal power and usually result in a two-fisted brawl by the conclusion. Such an idea wouldn't fit The Spectre given his power level, which is something that Nicolas Cage was concerned about. By avoiding these narrative needs, The Spectre can completely throw off superhero movie trappings and instead embrace supernatural mystery and horror full force.
A fantastic angle would be for Cage to portray both The Spectre and cop Jim Corrigan, with the latter not even aware that he's the host of the former. Thus, while investigating the supernatural retribution of God's wrath, Corrigan would unknowingly be "witness" to his paranormal vengeance. If anything, the only other supernatural element that should be present would be the Phantom Stranger, who plays a game of cat and mouse a la The Book of Job with The Spectre as they battle for human souls. It'd be completely unlike anything currently being done with "superhero" movies, and it might draw horror directors back to the genre.
Given his underrated penchant for unhinged and morally ambiguous characters, Cage would likely knock the role out of the park. It might even lead to crossovers with Swamp Thing and other supernatural DC characters. Since this is much of the direction that James Gunn seems to be going in, and given that it'd be a great way to stand out amid the comedic current crop of comic book movies, Nicolas Cage's Spectre may be haunting movie theaters sometime in the near future. https://www.cbr.com/nicolas-cage-the-spectre-good-fit-dcu/ | |

| I'm an MCU fan, and DC really does not excite me, at all. However, I might give whatever Spectre is if Cage would be cast. He is not a good fit nor ever was for Ghost Rider, but I'd love to see if he could slay Spectre if given the oppertunity. | |
