Cool find and I have already come across with this one some years ago but have not yet tried it out because I don't know much about 3D software like Blender.......and to me some quality Blender models are expensive, since I am quite poor no $$$ to buy some interesting Blender model...........

Perhaps it might be useful to Gladiacloud, who once also tried to turn XNALara models to pure 2D pixels..........

the tutorial recommends a free to download blender software. I have not tried it, but here is the site.
