- Back in July, as San Diego Comic-Con approached, it seemed we were about to find out who would be Doctor Strange on the big screen. Then Marvel's Hall H event came and went with no announcement. For a long time after that, despite rumors mentioning everyone from Jared Leto to Tom Hardy, it seemed all we had to do was wait for Joaquin Phoenix's contract to get sorted out before he was announced as the character. Then Phoenix was out and more rumors started. We thought we might meet Stephen Strange at the same Marvel press event that saw the debut of Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, but again we were disappointed. Now it's official. Doctor Strange is here.
Marvel announced via press release today that Benedict Cumberbatch, one of the most frequently mentioned actors in contention for the role, will play the Sorcerer Supreme when the character makes his big-screen debut in 2016. Cumberbatch already has a long history of winning genre fans over with his work in Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit franchise and more, and now we'll see him swearing by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth.
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
So, that's it. After months of rumors, unconfirmed reports and almost-announcements, Stephen Strange has been cast. Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts, will hit theaters on Nov. 4, 2016. | |
