| DC Studios co-CEO and filmmaker James Gunn finally announces his plan for the new DC Universe that he and Peter Safran are working on. - Quote :
- James Gunn has finally announced several plans for the new DC Universe that is coming from DC Studios. When it comes to the DC brand, it has been a rough couple of months with Warner Bros. Discovery making a lot of changes behind the scenes. While several movies and TV shows related to DC have been axed, the studio is attempting to go in a new direction. In November 2022, DC Studios was launched, with Gunn and Peter Safran appointed as co-CEOs. Over the last couple of weeks, Gunn has been teasing on social media that several DCU plans would be revealed this month.
With Gunn and Safran running movies, TV shows, animation, and video games for the DCU franchise, Gunn has revealed their plans. Screen Rant and other press attended a special event where Gunn and Safran unveiled the first half of Chapter 1 (their version of a Phase) for the DCU. Chapter 1 is called "Gods & Monsters" and will be kicking off in 2025. The announcement came with a total of 10 movies and TV shows that will be interconnected in this new universe. The goal is to have two movies, and two HBO Max shows released per year. The list of movies and TV shows is as follows.
Movies:
Superman: Legacy: Gunn is currently writing the screenplay, and Safran is hopeful the filmmaker will also direct the DC movie. Set to come out on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story but will focus on Clark's struggle to balance his superhero life with his human one. The story will also explore Superman being a beacon of kindness in a world that believes kindness is old-fashioned. The Authority: Gunn is currently outlining the film, which will be based on Wildstorm characters. The DC imprint will be brought into the main universe with the live-action movie. According to DC Studios, The Authority explores antiheroes who have good intentions while having to go to extremes due to how broken the world is. The Brave and the Bold: This will be a Batman and Robin story with a new star set to play the Dark Knight. Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck will, therefore not be starring in this film. Based on Grant Morrison's Batman run, the story sees Bruce discovering that Damian Wayne is his son. Taught to be an assassin, Bruce must now raise Damian under his wing. The Brave and the Bold will also feature other members of the Bat-family. It was not revealed if they have decided which actors will play them, or if DC Studios will even use stars that have been used previously. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: The Girl of Steel is getting her own solo movie, which will be based on Tom King’s recent DC run as he is an architect of the project too. While Superman was raised on Earth with kind parents, Supergirl stayed on a piece of Krypton that drifted off. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will explore her life as she was forced to see many loved ones die tragically. Swamp Thing: DC Studios is working on a movie that explores the dark origin story of Swamp Thing.
Television Shows:
Creature Commandos: This was the only animated series announced as part of the slate. Gunn has already written seven episodes for the series. Creature Commandos will center Rick Flagg Sr. (who is set to appear elsewhere in live-action, portrayed by his voice actor), Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein (who is the protagonist), G.I. Robot, and Weasel. Waller: The previously announced Amanda Waller spinoff series is moving forward with Viola Davis still set to star. The show will take place between Peacemaker seasons 1 and 2. This is because Gunn doesn't have time for Peacemaker right now. Doom Patrol executive producer Jeremy Carver and Watchmen scribe Christal Henry are heading up the series. Lanterns: While it's unclear if this is meant to be Greg Berlanti's Green Lantern TV show, Lanterns will center on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to DC Studios, it’s a detective mystery with the Green Lanterns serving as super cops on precinct Earth. Lanterns will lead into an overall story about an ancient horror while weaving between movies and DC TV shows. Paradise Lost: This is a Wonder Woman prequel series in the style of Game of Thrones, focusing on the origin of Themyscira before Diana Prince's time. Paradise Lost will explore how the political game that is played on Themyscira and what a society of women do in order to gain power. Booster Gold: A series focusing on the future tech superhero with imposter syndrome is in the works. DC Studios are currently speaking to an unspecified actor to play the titular role.
This is already a major commitment from DC Studios that will occupy the next couple of years. However, there are some missing players and movies that fans were likely expecting. Despite a Wonder Woman prequel series, there were no updates given about where the Themysciran heroine will fall into the DCU. This is especially crucial following all the confusion about Wonder Woman 3, and the lack of status about Gal Gadot's future.
The DCU's future with Aquaman and The Flash is also a massive mystery, but they may be revealed in the second half of Chapter 1. With The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hitting theaters this year, it's unclear how they factor into the new DCU, if at all. The other missing project that many were likely speculating would be revealed is a Justice League film. With Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Green Lantern having solo projects right now, they may be holding off with Justice League until the end of Chapter 1. There is also the possibility that DC Studios won't make a Justice League movie until Chapter 2.
As stated at the event, the other half of the slate will be revealed later, but this gives a strong idea of how connected the DCU will be across multiple mediums. For DC Studios, it is crucial to get the story and script absolutely right before starting on anything beyond writing. With two chapters that will span the course of 8-10 years, more projects will, of course, be announced once DC Studios feels ready. Gunn and Safran made it clear that the slate can still be moved around if that is what the movie or TV show needs at the time. With all of this leading to a unified endgame for the DC Studios team, it will be intriguing to follow the development of the DCU in the coming years.

- DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has personally announced the revamped DC Universe's first wave of movies, television series and other projects.
Shared by Gunn on Twitter is the video "James Gunn DC Slate Announcement," which opens with Gunn addressing DC Studios' prior "disconnected" nature for movies and television. He explained that his shared mission with co-CEO Peter Safran is keeping the future DCU unified for "one story" across film, "television, gaming and animation," while labeling projects outside this main universe, like director Matt Reeves' The Batman, part of "DC Elseworlds."
Gunn elaborated on DC Elseworlds, saying that The Batman universe is joined under this banner by director Todd Phillips' The Joker and the Teen Titans Go! animated cartoon. Gunn mentioned DC's upcoming films, listing off the following projects in release order: Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Of The Flash, he confirmed rumors and fan speculation about the film, saying that it "resets the entire DC Universe," before adding that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom "leads directly" into the future projects and 8 to 10-year plan he and Safran have mapped out. Gunn discussed what these projects are further.
The new DCU's first chapter, labeled "Gods and Monsters," will start with the animated series Creature Commandos written by Gunn, and artwork displayed in the video shows characters like Frankenstein and what appears to be Weasel from Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021). "Something we're going to do, that's a little bit different at DC, is we're going to have characters move into animation, out of animation, usually having the same actor play their voice as who plays them in live-action," Gunn explained. Continuing with the Suicide Squad theme, the next show revealed was Waller, with actor Viola Davis starring and reprising her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad and Gunn's Peacemaker series on HBO Max. Waller will be a spin-off of Peacemaker set to involve members of the original show, and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver.
After those shows, Gunn announced the young Superman movie he is in the middle of writing, Superman: Legacy, which he called "the true beginning of the DCU" and gave a July 11, 2025 release date for. Next up was Lanterns, a Green Lantern show focusing on John Stewart and Hal Jordan, but Gunn teased that there are "a few other Lanterns peppered in" the series. While Gunn said that Lanterns will be a "terrestrial-based," True Detective-like series set on Earth, it will uncover a "terrifying mystery" that ties into the "larger story of the DCU." Gunn then announced The Authority, a new film he considers a "passion project" and will focus on the super team comprised of WildStorm characters.
A prequel show was next on Gunn's list, Paradise Lost, which will explore the origin of Wonder Woman's home, Themyscira or "Paradise Island," prior to the Wonder Woman movies starring Gal Gadot. "It's almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island," Gunn said of the series. He then turned his attention away from Wonder Woman and onto Batman.
Gunn announced a movie that will introduce the DCU's Batman, The Brave and the Bold. Not only will it feature Batman, however, but being based on writer Grant Morrison's Batman run in comics, it will include the fifth Robin, Damian Wayne, Batman's biological son trained by assassins, who Gunn has declared his favorite Robin. "This is the story of the two of them, and the beginning of sort of the Bat-Family in the DCU," Gunn added.
After The Brave and the Bold came an HBO Max series titled Booster Gold, focusing on the titular hero that Gunn called "a loser from the future" that time travels back to the present to become a beloved superhero. The show was followed up by the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will draw its inspiration from the limited comic series by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely, and a Swamp Thing movie Gunn said will be a "very dark horror story" tonally outside the DCU, but still connected to its other projects.
Gunn closed out the video saying, "Those are the stories that I can tell you about right now. I've loved the DC characters since I was a child. They're incredibly important to me. I knew that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something very different." He stressed that "storytelling is always king," and that a goal for future projects is for each one to be unique with the director and writer's visions realized. "I want to be true to those stories and I want to be true to you guys, and really give you something different than you've ever seen before."

- The DC Universe's future has officially been revealed, including dozens of significant revelations about what James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning. The co-CEOs of DC Studios have spent the last few months planning the next 8-10 years of the DCU in secret. The duo confirmed during the time that followed that audiences would have to wait until January to know more about the plans. However, the flurry of rumors and new releases around the same time allowed announcements like Henry Cavill's Superman exit and Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam having no future to come to light.
After making audiences wait until the very last day of January, James Gunn and Peter Safran made good on their promise to unveil part of the DCU Phase 1 slate. This included confirming ten upcoming projects in the next several years and revealing how the 2023 DC movies fit into their larger plans. With a mixture of live-action films, live-action TV shows, and animated shows announced, the DCU future has become more clear. Here is everything James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed about the plans for DCU Phase 1 in movies and TV.
1 Shazam 2 & Blue Beetle Could Connect To The DCU Future
Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Blue Beetle were both made before the new DCU plans were put in motion, but both projects and characters could be kept as part of the new franchise. Gunn confirmed that the Shazam! sequel leads into The Flash and that Blue Beetle is totally disconnected from anything that came before. The latter makes it easier to add Xolo Mariedueña's Blue Beetle to the DCU moving forward. As for how Zachary Levi's Shazam could carry on in the future, that was not revealed. However, Safran produced the sequel, and the duo teased that some actors from before their tenure will be kept.
2 The Flash Movie WILL Reset The DC Universe
James Gunn confirmed that long-standing belief that The Flash movie resets the DCU. Due to the movie's multiverse and time-travel story, it was initially planned by the previous DC Films regime to be a place to reboot the franchise after years of changes. It is not confirmed how much of The Flash's reset will be kept for the new DCU franchise, but Gunn did offer high praise for the film director Andy Muschietti delivered. He and Safran also suggested that they have not made any changes to the movie to help set up their plans. Instead, The Flash's multiverse story appears to pave the way for a DCU reset naturally.
3 Aquaman 2 Will Lead Into The DC Universe's Superman Reboot
Gunn also suggested that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom leads into the DCU's Superman reboot movie. It is unclear if the co-CEO was referring to how Aquaman 2 is the last DCU movie releasing before the next Superman film (not including Joker: Folie à Deux) or if it is a sign that the Jason Momoa-led sequel directly sets up a Superman reboot. There have been teases that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's place in the canon is somewhat in flux after filming cameos for both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton's Batman. But it now sounds possible that Jason Momoa's Aquaman could connect to Gunn's Superman plans.
4 Superman: Legacy Title, Release Date, & Story
The big announcement for the DCU's future is that Superman: Legacy is the first movie to come in Phase 1. James Gunn is writing the script, which focuses on a younger Clark Kent who is already established as Superman and working to balance his superhero and regular life. He is meant to embody hope and be a light for a world that thinks kindness is old-fashioned. No new Superman actor has been cast for the project yet, but James Gunn might also direct if he has time. Superman: Legacy has an official July 11, 2025 release date set by Warner Bros.
5 DCU Phase 1 Is Called Gods And Monsters
The DCU movie and show slate announcement also gave Phase 1 a subtitle of its own: Gods and Monsters. Peter Safran announced the plan as part of the big presentation. Phase 1's Gods and Monsters title reflects the types of stories that DC Studios will tell and what characters will be at the center of it. This includes using Swamp Thing, the Bride of Frankenstein, and others as the Monsters, while Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman will help make up the Gods.
6 Creature Commandos Animated Series Includes Suicide Squad Ties
An animated series known as Creature Commandos was officially announced for HBO. James Gunn wrote all seven series episodes, which are already in production. Creature Commandos follows Bride of Frankenstein as the protagonist and features other DC characters like Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, and G.I. Robot. It also features two connections to The Suicide Squad, as Rick Flag Sr. - Rick Flag's father - and Weasel will appear. Creature Commandos will potentially release on HBO Max in 2024.
7 Waller TV Show Confirmed With Viola Davis & Peacemaker Characters Returning
It was also confirmed that the DCU future includes the Amanda Waller HBO series previously reported to be in development. Known simply as Waller, the series comes from Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol). It will take place between Peacemaker season 1 and season 2. Waller will see Viola Davis return as Amanda Waller, while several characters from Peacemaker are also scheduled to appear, but which ones were not confirmed. The series will potentially be ready for a 2024 release.
8 Peacemaker Season 2 Will Not Happen Soon Due To Gunn's Schedule
James Gunn did confirm that Peacemaker season 2 is not happening in the immediate future, though. Due to his new commitments as the co-CEO of DC Studios that include writing multiple projects and possibly directing Superman: Legacy, he has not had the time to work on a follow-up season to the hit HBO Max series. Peacemaker season 2 is still something that he and Safran want to make, but the timeline for the project to happen is unclear at the moment.
9 A Green Lanterns TV Show Following Hal Jordan & John Stewart
The Green Lanterns are finally returning and will play a pivotal role in the overall DCU story. A Lanterns HBO Max show is in development that will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the two most popular Green Lanterns in the comics. The series follows them in a True Detective-type mystery mostly set on Earth where they investigate an ancient horror. No actors have been cast as Hal Jordan or John Stewart. It was teased that the central mystery behind Lanterns' story will directly connect to the overall narrative that Gunn and Safran have in mind for the DCU's future.
10 Wonder Woman Prequel Show About Themyscira Will Be Like Game of Thrones
Paradise Lost is a new DCU show coming to HBO Max that serves as a Wonder Woman prequel about her home, Themyscira. The series is described as a Game of Thrones-style series that dives into the darkness, drama, and political intrigue behind the island. It will take place well before Diana Prince's birth and explore what a society full of women does to gain power. No creative team, cast, or release date was announced for Paradise Lost.
11 Gal Gadot Wants To Return As Wonder Woman In The DCU
James Gunn did confirm that while nothing is officially set in stone for Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman return, she is willing to come back and they are discussing various options. This comes after reports circulated that Wonder Woman 3 was canceled, leading to rumors that Gunn and Safran played a role in axing the project. Gal Gadot may be one of the previous DC actors to remain part of the DCU's future in their previous role. This would be understandable considering her fan-favorite status, even if it also means the DCU changes her story to accommodate the new universe plans.
12 Booster Gold TV Show Happening With Mystery Actor
The DCU's future plans also include a Booster Gold TV show for HBO Max. Following the time-traveling hero Michael Jon Carter, the series will explore imposter syndrome as he uses future technology to try and become a modern-day superhero. James Gunn confirmed that he and Safran are already talking to an actor about playing Booster Gold in the DCU, but they did not reveal who this person is. Booster Gold's creative team and release date were also not disclosed.
13 The Authority Movie Brings Anti-Heroes Into The DCU
Sticking close to his The Suicide Squad world, James Gunn is outlining a The Authority movie for the DCU. Based on the Wildstorm imprint that DC absorbed in 1999, The Authority follows a group of anti-heroes who believe the world needs saving and are willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal. This includes killing people, toppling governments, and more, as Gunn teased. It was not revealed which characters will be part of The Authority, but major comic characters like Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, and others are candidates to appear. The movie does not have a release date yet.
14 DCU Batman & His Son Debut In The Brave and the Bold Movie
The DCU is rebooting Batman with The Brave and the Bold, a movie that will bring Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne together. The film will star a new actor in the lead role of Batman and feature the live-action movie debut of Damian, who Batman did not know existed as he grew up as an assassin. The Brave and the Bold is based on Grant Morrison's Batman comics. It will feature other members of the Bat Family as Gunn and Safran feel like they have been left out too often, but which ones have yet to be decided.
15 Ben Affleck Is Not Returning As Batman
As part of the confirmation that the DCU is rebooting Batman, James Gunn reiterated that Ben Affleck is not returning as Batman in any capacity within the new plans. He does have an appearance in The Flash and potentially Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but that will be the end of his time as Bruce Wayne. Instead of continuing to play a DC superhero, Gunn once again shared Ben Affleck's interest in directing an upcoming DCU movie. It will not be The Brave and the Bold, but they are still figuring out the best property for him to work on.
16 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Movie Will Explore Her Dark Origin
A Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie is also in development for the DCU's future. Based on the 2022 comic run by Tom King, he is working with DC Studios to craft the new Supergirl movie. Gunn and Safran declined to confirm whether this would see Sasha Calle's Supergirl from The Flash star or have a different actress play the character. The early plan for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is to follow Supergirl after she stays on a piece of Krypton for 14 years after the planet was destroyed and watches loved ones around her die. The film does not have a release date.
17 Swamp Thing Movie Brings The Monsters To The DCU
It was also confirmed that a Swamp Thing movie is in development to bring the monsters to the DCU. Very little was revealed about the plans for Alec Holland a.k.a Swamp Thing and how he fits into the larger story. The movie will be an origin story for Swamp Thing. There is currently no confirmed writer, director, cast, or release date for the film.
18 DC Studios Architects Revealed, Includes The Flash & Moon Knight Writers
James Gunn and Peter Safran are not the only people working to craft the DC Studios plan, as they revealed a collection of writers that make up the Architects of the DCU. This includes The Flash and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, Moon Knight lead writer Jeremy Slater, and Deadpool 2 writer Drew Goddard. James Gunn, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow's Tom King, and Waller's Christal Henry are also among the group. They are busy writing various projects ahead of time to have a collective and unified vision for the future that helps ensure DCU projects have finished scripts before filming begins.
19 How Many DCU Movies & Shows Will Be Made Each Year
James Gunn also revealed the projected DCU output of movies and shows. The DC Studios' goal is to release two films and two HBO Max shows per year. This begins in 2025 with the release of Superman: Legacy and does not include non-DCU movies or shows. Based on this goal, there is still one DCU movie coming in 2025 that has yet to be officially dated, and it will not be The Brave and the Bold due to Matt Reeves' The Batman plans.
20 Not Every Phase 1 DCU Movie & Show Have Been Revealed
The 10 DCU movies and shows announced by James Gunn and Peter Safran do not include every project that will come out during this time. They announced most of Chapter 1 of Phase 1, which will have two Chapters by the time it concludes in 8-10 years. It was revealed that due to how long some movies and shows will take to make and how much others reveal about the larger plans, they could not reveal everything that is planned. Furthermore, they want to retain some flexibility in terms of the order that specific projects are released.
21 The Batman Is Remaining Separate & Will Be A Trilogy
Matt Reeves' The Batman trilogy is moving forward despite Gunn's DCU plans, and it will remain separate. The franchise will exist as part of the DC Elseworlds brand instead of bringing Robert Pattinson's Batman to the DCU. James Gunn confirmed plans for Reeves' The Batman trilogy to happen as part of his larger "crime saga" that includes spinoff shows. Warner Bros. also officially announced The Batman - Part II is happening with an October 3, 2025 release date.
22 More DC Elseworlds Movies Are Being Developed
There are also plans for the DCU future to include other DC Elseworlds movies beyond The Batman franchise. While Gunn and Safran want most of the DC content coming in the next several years to be part of the DCU canon, they are also keeping an open mind about telling stories outside the franchise. They say there will be an even higher bar for pitches for an Elseworlds DC movie to be made. Joker: Folie à Deux is one example of an upcoming Elseworlds movie, but they did not tease any other projects that could be in development.
23 Aquaman 3 Is Expected After the Lost Kingdom
The DCU future plan might also include the announcement of Aquaman 3. Gunn said that Jason Momoa always envisioned the franchise as a trilogy. Based on recent comments elsewhere from Momoa about continuing to play Aquaman in the future and having exciting DC news, Gunn's comments are further evidence that Aquaman 3 could indeed still happen. However, nothing is confirmed on this front, as DC Studios wants to wait until after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes out to determine what the future holds for Jason Momoa's character.
24 Jason Momoa Is Not Playing Lobo (Yet)
Aquaman Jason Momoa's Rumored NEW DC Character Lobo The DCU future announcements did confirm that Jason Momoa is not playing Lobo in the DCU, at least not yet. Gunn and Safran said that Momoa will never play two characters at the same time, dispelling the notion that he could play Aquaman and Lobo simultaneously. They also mentioned that the idea that Jason Momoa will play Lobo has been decided at this stage. This leaves the casting possibility open for the future depending on what happens with Aquaman.
25 Ezra Miller’s The Flash Could Stay After Solo Movie
The topic of Ezra Miller's DC future as The Flash was also addressed, as Gunn and Safran confirmed they are having conversations with them about what will happen after The Flash. The duo focused primarily on Miller's commitment to recovery and supporting them through it. Any discussions about The Flash 2 or Miller being recast appear to be on hold at the moment. However, Gunn shared his praise of The Flash as one of the best superhero movies he's ever seen and wants to work with director Andy Muschietti again. Using more of Ezra Miller in the DCU could be part of that plan.

- Chapter 1 of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU will officially be titled Gods & Monsters, but that moniker is much more than just a foreboding name. Following much feverish anticipation, Warner Bros. Discovery has unveiled its tentative first steps for rebooting DC in film and TV. Beginning in 2025 with Superman: Legacy, the first phase of the new DCU will comprise approximately two movies and two HBO Max TV shows per year, weaving together an overarching and cohesive shared universe between platforms.
Prior to Gunn and Safran being appointed co-heads of the new DC Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav declared his desire for an MCU-style approach to DC content. It is, therefore, no surprise to see the Gunn and Safran DC Universe franchise beginning with a big announcement that lays out plans for its very first phase. Unlike the MCU, however, each chapter in the DCU will have its own name, and the opening gambit carries a heading of Gods & Monsters. This phrase not only holds a powerful meaning within DC mythology, but resonates strongly with the projects Gunn and Safran have planned.
Gods & Monsters Is A Major Theme Of DC Stories
The duality between gods and monsters is a concept that underpins the DC universe both in comics and elsewhere. DC lore contains actual gods like Zeus and Ares, Superman types who become known as godlike figures, and a raft of classic DC villains who misguidedly attempt to claim godhood for themselves. This inevitably creates crossover with the "monsters" half of the Gods & Monsters concept. A DC monster can be a giant, grotesque, grunting creature covered in slime, or a bald man in a suit. Where superpowers are involved, both gods and monsters are never far behind, and the title makes for a fitting allusion toward one of DC's most prevalent themes.
Indeed, "Gods & Monsters" has been used before with 2015's animated Justice League: Gods & Monsters. While the DCU almost certainly has no connection to the cartoon, this parallel proves just how ingrained the eternal battle between gods and monsters is within DC DNA. At the heart of said battle is a question that will seemingly play a major role in the DCU's first chapter: what is the difference between gods and monsters? Superman: Legacy and other releases in the DCU era of movies and TV will evidently toy with this fine balance between what it means to be a god, and what it means to be a monster.
Which Characters Are Gods & Which Are Monsters In DC Universe Chapter 1
The DCU chapter 1's "Gods & Monsters" title naturally encourages questions over which characters are which. On the divine side of the equation, Paradise Lost covers the Amazonians of Themyscira, while both Superman and Supergirl appear on Earth, seeming akin to gods in comparison to the natives. As for monsters, Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos are the two obvious representatives, but Amanda Waller and Damian Wayne could both be considered monstrous for their dark actions and skewed moralities. The beauty of the DCU's "Gods & Monsters" title, however, is that every definition is ambiguous.
The Authority and Booster Gold in the DCU will likely see themselves as heroes, whereas many would argue they are closer to monsters. The likes of Swamp Thing could defy the "monster" tag, whereas actual gods may ultimately prove more monster-ish in nature. The "Gods & Monsters" title poses the question of whether one move from Superman pushes him from one category to the other, or whether a boy trained as a monster, like Damian Wayne, can become something better. There are gods and monsters aplenty in the first DCU chapter, but defining characters under those banners may not be as straightforward as it appears.
