For franken spriting I mainly use GIMP! I have a rather easy time franken spriting but one thing continues to trouble me. And that is choosing the right colors for a sprite!
Here, take a look at this picture and see the boxes on the side with multiple colors included in the sprite.
In short: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET THOSE BOXES WITH THE COLORS o_o

Those color boxes next to your image sprite came from the image next to it. They are just collected from the image itself.
I call them color samples, you collect them to reuse them as if you were a painter. You do this to keep your sprites looking the same.
